Welcome to the
Psychiatry Residency Program
An important part of our program is nurturing an environment where you will be able to explore what motivates you, surround yourself with people who will inspire you, and discover which areas of the medical profession are most personally and professionally satisfying to you. And our continual efforts to provide a balance between personal renewal and professional growth makes our Psychiatry resident program a dynamic place to learn and grow.
Our residents, faculty and staff are the very heart of our program and, therefore, we desire to create a friendly and supportive team-focused experience where every resident feels welcomed and respected. Here at MCH, diversity and inclusion are more than words, they are commitments that are an important part of our program culture. And we are passionate about providing you with one of the finest training programs in resident Psychiatry.
Psychiatry Residency Curriculum
During their training, residents must meet the ACGME Psychiatry residency education accreditation requirements and eligibility requirements for Board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Specific required educational experiences for psychiatry residency training vary by program, although several months are spent in required rotations in each of the following areas: inpatient psychiatry, primary care, and outpatient psychiatry.
After two weeks of orientation, which begins in mid-June, a typical schedule for Year 1 includes:
- 6 blocks Inpatient Psychiatry
- 4 blocks Primary Care
- 2 blocks Neurology
- 1 block Emergency Psychiatry
Our second-year residents expand on their knowledge and experience through additional specialty rotations while increasing their daily continuity patient visits. They also serve as supervisory residents during the inpatient medicine months, and opportunities to explore areas of interest are also provided through the electives process.
- 5 blocks Inpatient Psychiatry
- 2 blocks Consultation Liaison
- 2 blocks Emergency Psychiatry
- 2 blocks Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- 1 block of Addiction Psychiatry
- 1 block Elective
Third year residents spend considerable time preparing for their transition into private practice by playing an increasing leadership role in the care of their patients and with the interdisciplinary care team.
- 11 blocks Outpatient Psychiatry
- 1 block Forensics Psychiatry
- 1 block Geriatrics Psychiatry
Our fourth-year residents expand on their knowledge and experience through specialty rotations while increasing their daily continuity patient visits.
