FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
MISSION & VISION
The Mission Community Hospital, UCLA Affiliated, Family Medicine Residency Program strives to train family physicians who come from diverse backgrounds. Our purpose is to help learners become competent and independent Family Physicians who are highly skilled at providing comprehensive, compassionate, quality and patient-centered care. Our Program aims to graduate Family Physicians who are proficient community leaders and healthcare advocates for all patients and their families.

Welcome to the Family Medicine Residency Program at Mission Community Hospital (MCH). As a UCLA-affiliated program, our broad-based teaching program trains family physicians to become outstanding physicians and leaders who will provide exceptional care to patients, families, and communities. At MCH, we are committed to cultivating a culture of quality service. Our residents learn practical, evidence-based patient care skills while working closely with faculty and support staff. Our experienced faculty are highly regarded professionals who will provide exceptional guidance throughout your residency experience.

Program Curriculum
During training, residents must meet the ACGME Family Medicine residency education accreditation requirements as well as the eligibility requirements for Board certification by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP).
Specific required educational experiences for family medicine residency training vary by program, although several months are spent in required rotations in each of the following areas: obstetrics, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine, and inpatient hospital care (including critical care).
After two weeks of orientation, which begins in mid-June, a typical schedule for Year 1 includes:

- Orthopedics/Sport Medicine

- Infection Disease

Our second-year residents expand on their knowledge and experience through additional specialty rotations while increasing their daily continuity patient visits. They also serve as supervisory residents during the inpatient medicine months, and opportunities to explore areas of interest are also provided through the electives process.

Third-year residents spend considerable time preparing for their transition into private practice by playing an increasing leadership role in the care of their patients and with the interdisciplinary care team. Ample time is also provided to explore areas of interest through the extensive electives schedule.

Mission Community Hospital is located in the heart of the vast San Fernando Valley, just north of downtown Los Angeles. The communities we care for are largely populated with underserved individuals and families with enormous healthcare needs. Many are hesitant to seek professional medical care due to a variety of socioeconomic, language, and cultural barriers. However, at MCH we continually work to overcome those barriers and meet the needs in our community by providing the highest quality of care in a compassionate manner.
